The Trombone Shorty Foundation, in partnership with the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, recently offered a free songwriting workshop for youth ages 14-24. This “Songwriting Masterclass for Beginners” was held Monday, October 2 and Wednesday, October 4 at the Jazz & Heritage Center. The Trombone Shorty Foundation focuses on providing young musicians with the skills and experiences to become professionals, and songwriting plays an important role in that artistic development. We were thrilled to have award winning artist, New Orleans’ own singer-songwriter Anders Osborne lead these sessions!
These Masterclasses were ideal for students interested in learning more about the craft of songwriting with the goal of generating their own, original material. Osborne shared valuable insight using a step-by-step approach to musical and lyrical development that he has honed over decades of experience. Special guest Kirk Joseph of Dirty Dozen Brass Band joined the workshop on Day 2, and over 25 young budding songwriters were in attendance to learn in this supportive and interactive setting. It was an incredible couple of days and we can’t wait to see what these students come up with! All photos by Erika Goldring.
