Trombone Shorty Foundation supports youth with their professional development and growth within the music industry through the Fredman Music Business Institute. In these courses, youth learn the business side of the music industry to build the skills they need to build successful career paths. Ranging from intro to the Music Industry to Beatmaking, these courses provide youth with the skills they need to help develop their careers in the music industry. Intro to the Music Industry – November 12th, 14th, 19th, and 21st from 6:30pm – 8pm
Want to learn more about the music industry, but aren’t sure where to begin? In this 4-day course session, individuals will be provided with a broad overview of the music industry, including the key roles and players in the industry, how various segments of the industry operate, and how money is made and exchanged. Individuals enrolled in this course will gain an overall understanding of what the music industry is to help them figure out their path and achieve their goals in the industry.
Each session will begin with the introduction of a topic, followed up with a more
in-depth explanation, and we will finish with a discussion and Q&A
- Class 1 – Overview and introduction to roles in the industry.
- Class 2 – Introduction to copyright and how it shapes the music industry.
- Class 3 – The structure of the industry: Production and Performance.
- Class 4 – How does music make money… and how do I find my place in it?
This 4-class series will take place on Tuesday, November 12th, Thursday, November 14th, Tuesday, November 19th, and Thursday, November 21st at the New Orleans Career Center, 1331 N. Kerelec St.
The program is free, but advanced registration is required.
Intro to Music Production – December 3rd, 5th, and 10th
In this introductory 3-day course, individuals will get an overview into the basics of music production and audio engineering. Individuals will understand signal flow, microphones and home studio setups, DAWs, as well as a hands-on intro to audio and MIDI editing, and the basics of mixing. No prior experience is needed – this class is open to all levels. Students are encouraged to bring their own laptops and headphones, although some will be available for use.

in-depth explanation, and we will finish with a discussion and Q&A
- Class 1 – Overview of the Recording/Production process. Introduction to terminology.
- Class 2 – The basics of Digital Audio, Signal Flow, and File Management. How to ensure transportability in your work.
- Class 3 – Further exploration into Digital Audio and the Recording Process. Overview of Digital Audio Workstations.
The event is a program of the Trombone Shorty Foundation. This 3-class series will take place on Tuesday, December 3rd, Thursday, December 5th, and Tuesday, December 10th at the New Orleans Career Center, 1331 N. Kerelec St.
