Formed in 2025, the Trombone Shorty Foundation Alumni Federation and Leadership Council brings together a committed group of alumni dedicated to strengthening and expanding that impact, deepening connections across the TSF community, and paving the way for those who follow.
The Trombone Shorty Foundation Alumni Federation represents a vibrant community of young musicians, educators, cultural leaders, and more at every stage of their careers, all of whom have completed multiple years of our programs (some in our very first year in operation!). Alums share a deep commitment to artistic growth, community connection, and carrying forward the rich traditions of New Orleans music.

As a member of the Alumni Federation, our alumni have access to:

The Alumni Leadership Council members initiate events that strengthen local networks of current alumni, provide mentorship and support to further the careers of current students and graduates, and leverage their collective influence to ensure a welcoming and equitable future for Trombone Shorty Foundation’s programs.
As a Trombone Shorty Foundation alum, you are part of something bigger than any single program or performance. You are part of a living legacy, one rooted in New Orleans and reaching stages across the world. The Federation exists to make sure that legacy continues to grow, and that every alum has the support, opportunity, and community they need to thrive.
ALUMNI LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
The Alumni Leadership Council (ALC) is an annual cohort of highly engaged alumni of the Trombone Shorty Foundation (TSF), open to young adults up to age 29 who have demonstrated deep involvement across TSF programming, including the Academy, Fredman Courses, Masterclasses, and Cultural Experiences. As we reconnect with our alumni from our over 13 years of programs and as we continue to have more and more youth graduate from programs each year, Alumni will be invited to apply to join the Leadership Council annually. Members will:
- Serve as liaisons and decision-making representatives for the broader alumni network.
- Act as “boots on the ground” to connect with and mobilize alumni.
- Gather feedback and source themes for alumni masterclasses, events, conversations, and support needs.
- Provide leadership in shaping alumni engagement activities, programming, and opportunities.
- Serve as mentors and instructors to current TSF program participants, including Trombone Shorty Academy, Fredman Music Institute, Masterclasses, and Cultural Experiences
- Serve as the primary point of contact with TSF on behalf of alumni.
- Represent TSF as spokespeople, supported by training and cultural exchange opportunities.
ALUMNI LEADERSHIP COUNCIL- FAQ’S
Who is eligible for the program?
The Alumni Leadership Council is open to Trombone Shorty Foundation Alumni. You’re eligible if you’re a graduate of any TSF program, including the Trombone Shorty Academy, the Fredman Music Business Institute, or the Music Industry Apprenticeship/Pathways to Careers Program.
Do I have to live in New Orleans to be part of it?
No. However, being in the New Orleans area may be helpful for in-person programming.
When and where does it take place?
The program includes a mix of in-person and/or virtual sessions (depending on where council members are based) along with independent work. Monthly meetings will be scheduled with the full group once the council is selected, and meeting times will likely be in the early evening.
What is the time commitment?
This is a 9-month commitment. The council meets once per month as a full group and once per month in committees, with an overall time commitment of about 5–10 hours per month. Leadership Council members may also have the opportunity to travel with TSF to locations across the U.S.
Do you get paid for being in the program?
Yes! Leadership Council participants receive a $500/month stipend.

What happens after I apply?
The Trombone Shorty Foundation will review all applications and follow up with applicants to schedule interviews. If you’re selected for an interview, you’ll be contacted by email to set up a time.
What if I don’t have a ride to the program?
We encourage participants to arrange their own transportation when possible. If transportation is a barrier, TSF staff will work with you to help secure a way to get to in-person meetings.
Do you have to be a musician to participate?
No! Anyone who loves music and wants to deepen their leadership skills is welcome to apply.
